Chocolate, Waffles, and the Cold for Everyone

I took a much needed break from blogging, but not traveling, so I am back with another trip: Belgium! I went to Brussels and Ghent with two friends for a weekend back in January and fell in love with the country. I’m honestly not that surprised because it’s the land of chocolate and if you know me, you know I’m a self-proclaimed chocoholic. I ate my way through the streets of Brussels and was amazed at the amount of chocolate that surrounded me. I was speechless (literally). Though it was a short trip, I could see myself returning for a longer stay in the future when I’m not living on a teaching assistant’s stipend and can take a suitcase of chocolate home. Sounds good, right?

Cafes, day trip to Ghent, and chocolate

Aside from the chocolate, my friends and I did see the city. Our hostel was very central and since the main tourist attractions are in the center, we walked everywhere. We went to the beautiful Grand Place at night (see above) and later went to Little Delirium Cafe for a beer per recommendation from a co-worker. On our second day we took a quick day trip to Ghent, a cute town outside of Brussels. We almost didn’t make it because the ticket worker at the front desk told us (and about 5 other people) the wrong platform to catch the train! After getting off about 15 minutes into our ride going the completely opposite direction, we all scrambled from platform to platform trying to find the right one. I’m once again thankful for good samaritans who helped us figure it out! At the time it was stressful, but it bonded us all for those few hours and later that afternoon we finally made it to Ghent.

Waffles in winter

Of course we also tried a proper Belgian Waffle and I don’t think I’ve tasted a waffle batter so delicious. I normally need syrup or some kind topping with breakfast foods like pancakes, french toast or waffles, but these waffles can stand alone. Again, if I had the money I would fly back just for another waffle. Weather wise I’m not gonna lie, it was cold even for a Wisconsinite. The wind was in full force and I was sick, but that didn’t stop us from going out from midnight until it was time for our 6am flight back to Spain. Oh to be young travelers! On the plane we all were sad to leave and would have loved to stay longer, but tis’ life. Until next time!
